Drawing the line further from where "Getting into the User Environment" stopped,
this presentation invites everybody to look more deeply into the use of social
networks (open or closed) by our users in general and focusses in particular on the
development of library services inside various types of social networks.What are the
benefits of making your medical library visible inside MySpace or Facebook?
And how do online personal startpage applications like iGoogle, Netvibes or
Pageflakes fit into this? The network (evolved by technology) is changing the users
behaviour and that will affect the future of information services.

Web 2.0 technologies, like del.iciou.us, Podcasting, Netvibes, Second Life,

LibraryThing, Screencasting have almost unlimited possibilities. But how can you use

these in library instructions?

In this paper I will focus on personal start page tools like Netvibes (look-alikes are

iGoogle, Pageflakes, MyYahoo). With this tool you can make your own free personal

start page. It allows you to put all your web resources into one page, including blogs,

news, email, podcasts, pictures, videocasts, rss-feeds. You can also share the content

of a Netvibes-page with others. This makes it possible to develope pages for specific

departments but also to use it in instructions. In the presentation I will demonstrate

Netvibes: What is it, how do libraries use Netvibes, do they use it at all? How can we

use Netvibes in our library classes?

e-Science, also known as cyberinfrastructure or e-Research, is characterized by dataintensive,

information-intensive, distributed, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research.

Scholars in all fields are taking advantage of new sources of data and new means to

publish and distribute their work online. Content in digital form, whether text from

digitized books or data from sensor networks, can be mined to ask new questions, in new

ways. However, the practices, products, and sources of data vary widely between

disciplines. Some fields are more advantaged than others by the array of content now

online and by the tools and services available to use it. No longer are data considered

interim products to be discarded once the research reporting them is published. Rather,

they have become important sources of scholarly content to be used and reused. As the

demand for curation of research data accelerates, data repositories may become the new

special collections for research libraries. The advent of e-Science presents an array of

challenges and responsibilities for libraries, such as scalable and sustainable

infrastructure, open access to publications and data, and policies for access to data and

computational resources. This talk will provide an overview of developments in e-

Science with specific attention to medical and health libraries.

For medical libraries marketing and public relations are essential factors, which are important for
strategic planning. They positively affect the imbedding into the organization and the customer
relationship. The decrease of the information monopoly, the flood of information, and the
increasing competition strengthen the necessity for marketing activities. This is especially true
for virtual services, services that are electronic-only and are growingly used remote, like
eJournals, eBooks, eReference, Portals etc. Fundamental principles of marketing and public
relations are described and illustrated with examples from the Branch Library of Medicine at
Münster. New methods for target marketing of virtual services are presented.
